Ella is looking for one of her fairy godmothers, Lucinda, who gave her as a birth gift the need to be obedient, in other words being compelled to do anything asked of her. While Lucinda sees anything she does as being a gift, it has been a curse for Ella, who wants Lucinda to rescind the gift. It has become especially problematic in Ella's new stepsister, cruel Hattie, noticing Ella's compulsion for obedience, but not knowing why, Hattie thus now controlling Ella's life for her own benefit. While Ella has had a negative view of those in current power in the kingdom, namely King Regent Edgar, and soon to be King, Edgar's nephew Prince Char, her search for Lucinda affects her view most specifically of Prince Char, which is only complicated in that Hattie, like many young women in the kingdom, aspires to be Mrs. Prince Char and thus eventually Queen.
