Carpenter Josh Camden of Bethany, Wisconsin, leads a simple and lonely existence. His mother, Helen Camden, who lives in an extended care facility, suffers from Alzheimer's. She has not recognized Josh in two years despite his constant visits. Because of the cost of her care, Josh currently lives in a small decommissioned and run down Methodist Church which he is renovating. In the lead up to Easter, Josh encounters a group of four preteen boys at Fryman Lake in the woods just outside of town, one of the four, twelve year old Luke Quinn, who is pinned under a fallen log in the lake. Josh is able to pull Luke from the water, but nothing Luke or the first responders do is able to revive Luke, who is pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. After Luke's tearful mother, Sarah Quinn, says her goodbyes to Luke, he, a full hour since his last breath, comes back to life immediately following Josh putting his hands on Luke's shoulder and saying, "I wish to God you could have lived, kid". The local media, who jump on the story, believe Luke's revival is a miracle facilitated by Josh. Despite Josh not believing he doing anything miraculous, he is nonetheless considered a local hero. Within this spotlight, Josh and the Quinns form a relationship, Sarah who is as equally lonely as Josh. One by one, other things occur which are attributed to Josh being a Messiah. Bounding into town is national investigative on-air reporter Delia Tynan, who doesn't like the assignment if only because of being a big city snob, but who also senses that this story could be the biggest of her career. Opportunistic Delia, in wanting a sensationalistic story, may, in bringing a national spotlight to Josh and by association Luke and Sarah, may threaten Josh and Sarah's burgeoning romance. Despite Josh not believing he having any special powers, he may, deep in his heart, want those powers when his mother faces a medical crisis.
