Journalist Alicja Tabor (Magdalena Cielecka) returns to her home town of Walbrzych after years away. Three children are missing and Alicja has decided to write a story about them. She meets relatives of the missing children and is able to ask them questions. During her unauthorized investigation, Alicja unexpectedly comes across dramatic events that began decades earlier. In her abandoned parents' house, where she spends the night, she is haunted by dark memories from her childhood, from which she had fled her entire adult life. Alicja had an older sister who protected her but then took her own life. As she traces the past, she receives help from a mysterious old neighbor who knows much more about her than she realizes. In her search for the truth, she has to deal with traumas that date back to the end of the Second World War.
