Plot:
Gloucester, MA. Seventeen year old Ruby Rossi is somewhat of an outcast among her classmates. While commercial fishing alongside her father Frank and her older brother Leo and thus often going to school smelling like work, the biggest issue is that she is a proverbial freak in being the only hearing member in her family, the fourth and final member being her mother Jackie. The other three have generally relied on Ruby to be their intermediary with the hearing community. Wanting to integrate more with her peers, Ruby does something solely for herself for the first time in her love of music to which her family is somewhat oblivious: join the school's choir. While Ruby's introduction to it is less than positive, the choir director, Mr. Villalobos, can see true talent in her, as well as in fellow member Miles Patterson, her quiet attraction to who was another reason for joining. Ruby's life gets pulled in different directions as Mr. Villalobos encourages her to apply to the Berklee School of Music, at the same time that her parents are relying on her more as they try to organize a coop among the fishers so as not to be gouged by the middlemen distributors.
