In the town of Rossmore, Illinois, working-class college professor Casanova Brown and socialite Madge Ferris are about to be married, their relationship partly predicated on Cas' demand that Madge never mention the ill-fated trip he took to New York last year for what ended up being an unsuccessful attempt to get his manuscript on his famous namesake published. Her father, lawyer J.J. Ferris, who is all bark and no bite, disapproves of the marriage, not because he believes Cas is out for the Ferris money, but because he doesn't think Madge is good enough for Cas. The day before the wedding, Cas receives an official-looking but somewhat cryptic letter from a Dr. Martha Zernecke in Chicago, implying it of a personal nature best discussed in person sooner than later. Only confiding in J.J., Cas believes the letter has something to do with the real reason he wants to put that New York trip behind him. On that trip, he met, fell in love with, and married Isabel Drury, all on the same day. If honest to himself, he would admit that he is still in love with Isabel and would still be married to her--the marriage was annulled--if not for the auspicious sole meeting he had with her wealthy parents, during which Isabel sided with them instead of him. With J.J.'s blessing, Cas heads off to Chicago the morning of the wedding to meet with Dr. Zernecke, expecting to be back in Rossmore well before the ceremony. Cas ultimately finds that the letter has to do with Isabel, but not all is what appears on the surface--and Cas takes decisive action on that surface belief that threatens his future with Madge or what he would truly want with Isabel.
