Plot:
Brain surgeon Dr. Ernest Sovac is eking out a life with his young adult daughter Jean in Newcastle with the help of his best friend, mild-mannered English professor George Kingsley. The Sovacs and Kingsley's wife Margaret watch in horror as the professor is run down in a "wrong place at the wrong time" accident. The driver of the vehicle is Red Cannon, a New York gangster who was being pursued by his gun-toting associates led by Eric Marnay. Dr. Sovac accompanies the professor and Cannon, both seriously injured, in the ambulance to the hospital. The lead physician, Sovac, in a purely altruistic move to save his friend, decides to sacrifice a paralyzed Cannon to transplant his brain into Kingsley, who would have died without some drastic intervention. Sovac tells no one what he did in the surgery being highly experimental and illegal, on top of he having killed Cannon. But as Kingsley recovers seemingly fully, he begins to exhibit traits of Cannon, including having some of his memories. Noticing what is happening, Sovac tries to capitalize in this change in his friend to locate $500,000 of mob money that Cannon had hidden, money which could fund Sovac's life work. However, Marnay is also after the hidden money, the reason he was chasing Cannon in the first place, which could place the professor's life further in jeopardy.
