In 17th-century Pescia, Italy, Benedetta Carlini enters a Theatine convent as a child, eventually rising to become a revered nun who claims to experience vivid, divinely inspired visions of Jesus Christ. As she gains influence, the convent takes in Bartolomea, a young peasant woman seeking refuge from an abusive home. Assigned to be Benedetta's companion, Bartolomea is drawn into a passionate, forbidden affair with the nun, blurring the lines between spiritual devotion and carnal desire. However, as Benedetta's "miracles"-including the appearance of stigmata-begin to shake the church hierarchy, she faces intense scrutiny from skeptical officials.
