When Benedetta is afflicted by mysterious pains, a young novice is assigned to care for her: Bartolomea, who fled violence in her family home and was admitted to the convent only through Benedetta's intercession. A close bond grows between the devout, strong-willed Benedetta and the frivolous Bartolomea, a bond that increasingly defies the convent's rules. At the same time, Benedetta's visions become more frequent - until one morning she wakes up with stigmata on her hands and feet. For many, the stigmata are a sign of divine election, which is why she is appointed the new abbess.
