A close bond grows between the devout, strong-willed Benedetta and the frivolous Bartolomea, a bond that increasingly defies the convent's rules. At the same time, Benedetta's visions become more frequent - until one morning she wakes up with stigmata on her hands and feet. For many, the stigmata are a sign of divine election, which is why she is appointed the new abbess. For others, the wounds are a cheap attempt at deception, and Benedetta's new status is a thorn in their side: privileges, influence, and growing public veneration meet with envy, doubt, and attempts to uncover the secret behind the "miracles."
