Plot:
In the not-too-distant future in New York. A bio-synthetic chip implanted in every human being records their life from their perspective. The police have access to the data, which is stored like films in the so-called ether. Sal Frieland (Clive Owen), a cop with the New York Police Department, can therefore see with his own eyes what the victims or other people saw when a crime was committed. As a result, the crime rate has fallen sharply. But a series of murders interrupts Frieland's track record. Although the experienced cop can still see the victims' last minutes in the form of their recordings in the ether, the murderer or murderers remain hidden. Frieland realizes that he is faced with the almost impossible task of finding a manipulated victim recording. To track down the hacker and alleged murderer, Sal goes undercover. The police already have a suspect. Some time ago, Sal noticed a woman on the street who was trying to hack into the recordings of passers-by who had looked her in the face. Sal had noticed the manipulation. His superior, Charles Gattis (Colm Feore), gives him the opportunity to set a trap for the woman. Sal pretends to be a banker who wants to delete a one-night stand with a prostitute. His girlfriend is not supposed to notice the indiscretion when she wants to see his recording. Sal invites the woman he noticed on the street to an apartment rented by the police. Her name is Anon (Amanda Seyfried). Anon explains to her supposed client that she wants to remain anonymous in the real world under all circumstances. Her home is the cyber world. She earns her money by providing alibis in cyberspace for people who want to hide something. Her clients, almost all of whom have since been murdered, had usually done something criminal, such as manipulating stock prices or passing off fake images as real. Anon shows Sal how perfectly she has mastered her manipulative craft. But does that make her the murderer Sal is looking for? A cat-and-mouse game begins between Sal and Anon that threatens his very existence. Because after a short time, someone has hacked into Sal's eyes, making him see things that aren't there, driving him to the brink of madness. Sal finds it increasingly difficult to distinguish between his reality and the manipulated recording of his reality. When he comes under suspicion of murdering his neighbor and is suspended from duty, he must find Anon again, even though she has long known that he is a cop.
