Ancient Rome

This superbly photographed series introduces us to a city of the past, as distinct from a city with a past. Modern Rome is, as far as possible, cleverly eliminated, and as we gaze upon the city of magnificent ruins, with its palaces. Colosseum, Forum, Arches, Capitoline Hill, Catacombs, etc. We seem actually to breathe the atmosphere of the mad Caesars, of Augustus, Tiberius. Agrippa, Caius Caligula. Nero; of Julia, Lydia and Agrippina: we forget our present environment as we see the catacombs and Colosseum, with their memories of the persecution and martyrdom of the early Christians.
