As she turns thirty-one, native Scot Sophie reflects back to a vacation twenty years earlier with her father Calum to a Turkish beach resort, she viewing video footage they took of it. At the time, he and Sophie's mother had divorced, and he and Sophie did not see each other often in her mother having custody and he having moved to London. Beyond the regular push and pull between parent and offspring that naturally occurs, Calum and Sophie had a loving relationship, and he cared for her then and expressed care for her as she was close to entering her formative teen years. She views this caring relationship in light of what she knows of her father now and what he hid or tried to hide from her about the state of his life.
