Plot:
Billy Bear helps his partner-in-crime, Albert Ganz, who was convicted of armed robbery, escape from a road gang. A couple of days after Ganz's escape, on a Saturday morning, Ganz and Billy find and kill one of their partners, Henry Wong, in San Francisco, leaving him on a park bench. Ganz and Billy also kidnap Rosalie, the girlfriend of Luther, one of their two living partners-in-crime, and they tell Luther that they'll release Rosalie if he brings them the money that a man named Reggie hid. That same morning, Jack Cates, an alcoholic cop in San Francisco, reports for duty, and responds to the Walden Hotel with Detectives Algren and VanZant. A man named G. P. Polson, who claimed that a teenager with a switchblade mugged him and took off on a motorcycle. Algren and VanZant believe that the mugger rented a room at the hotel under Polson's name. At the hotel, they find that the man who rented the room is Ganz. Ganz warns Billy that the cops are there, so Billy kills VanZant, and Ganz kills Algren, leaving Jack angry, and wanting Ganz and Billy to pay for what they did. After Jack gets a lead concerning Reggie Hammond, Ganz and Billy's only other living partner besides Luther, Jack's boss, Haden, reluctantly lets him pursue it alone. Reggie has 6 months to go on a three year sentence for armed robbery. Jack gets Reggie a 48 hour furlough from prison, hoping that Reggie will know how to find Ganz and Billy. It's a chaotic 48 hours as Reggie takes Jack from one place to another, throughout the city, in search of clues, getting into several scrapes with others, and with each other, along the way. Jack thinks that Ganz escaped from prison because he's after something, and it's clear that Jack and Reggie don't exactly get along with each other. Will they be able to co-exist well enough to find Ganz and Billy?
